m-news > Issue 47, June 2006

This is m-news, M Power's monthly e-newsletter.  It's in its fifth year and goes out each month to hundreds of people who work in or run organisations and understand the power of effective communication.

m-news includes information about related themes - four snippets about business, organisational and individual effectiveness, communication and public relations.

M Power is a Melbourne based public relations company that believes communication empowers. Karen Morath is the founder and Managing Director of M Power. M Power provides consulting, training and communication services to organisations largely in the local government and private sectors.

The ‘fast four' for June are

1. Bloggers gain power
2. A quote we like
3. Google Alerts
4. This month's book review

1. Bloggers gain power

According to international PR consultancy chief Richard Edelman, bloggers are (arguably) driving the media agenda in virtually every country around the globe.

As a result, organisations and individuals need to re-think the way they manage their reputations and develop relationships with the world beyond them.

 2. A quote we like

Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.

Source Theodore Roosevelt

3. Google Alerts

Here's a tip for keeping track of the things you're most interested in, while you're sitting at your desk.

Google Alerts (on the Google homepage under 'more') will email you anytime there is something published anywhere in the world on the subjects or people you nominate.

I track people including myself, all of our client organisations, artists and writers whose careers I follow, particular industries I am interested in and places around the world that I love.

If you're not already using it, do.

4. This month's book review

The Big Picture by Bernard Salt, Hardie Grant, 2006  $29.95

A great read and a worthy sequel to the seminal 'The Big Shift'.  Bernard Salt explores the generations, how we live and, on the relationships front, explains the difference between 'hooking up' and 'happily ever after' (should you want or need to know).

He has media-bite points of view on topics as diverse as recycling, town planning and how you know when you're middle-aged (should you want or need to know).

It offers a few laughs along the way and is equally satisfying as a professional tool as a pleasurable read for personal interest only.
