The fast four for October are
Public relations of the future
In his ‘Manifesto for the 21st century public relations firm’ international public relations commentator Paul Holmes states that 'true authenticity' is what organisations of the 21st century will strive for and that the best public relations practitioners will guide them. True authenticity! What is more authentic than authentic? At least, the prediction sets a path for ethical governance and moral, open communication and that really is what best practice public relations is all about.
That authenticity is expected to run to the individuals involved in the communication, and this will give - surprisingly and counterintuitively - older practitioners an advantage.
Public relations practititioners (and their marketing counterparts) will - and do - need to have lived their organisation's work. If you are part of communicating to families buying houses, it will be increasingly important that you have been part of a family buying a house. If you are part of communicating to housewives about weightloss, you guessed it, your best work will come from having walked a mile in their shoes. If you are communicating financial advice to retirees and you're not one, you will be at an authenticity disadvantage that only intensive research can redress.
Organisations looking for public relations advice would be well served to seek counsel with this in mind.
This new trend is to be welcomed. Real authenticity forever.
A quote we like
“I can not give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure: try to please everybody.”

This month's book review
Media Relations by Jane Johnston, Allen and Unwin 2007
This is not a book of general interest but for anyone in public relations or who needs or wants a greater understanding of the media relations aspect of public relations, this is the ultimate authority on the subject. The author is a Brisbane-based professor who was a journalist and then a public relations practitioner before pursuing academia.
Last month M Power -
- coached some clients on how to be themselves and still do dazzling presentations
- wrote and edited articles that position clients as experts in their field
- consulted on the publication of a book
- maintained our own professional development needs by attending various events and talks
- taught public relations and writing
- worked with clients on public relations campaigns
- defined the parameters of a major research project
- authored articles on a variety of communication-based subjects
- blogged - www.communicationempowers.blogspot.com
- as usual, we researched, wrote and produced a number of newsletters for ourselves and clients.
