The ‘fast four’ for January are

1. JFK
2. A quote we like
3. Tips for reputation building
4. This month’s book review

1. JFK

John F Kennedy was president of America for only 1,000 days, roughly three years.  Starting right now at the beginning of this year, what can you achieve in only three?

2. A quote we like

“True professionalism is the courage to care about your people, your clients and your career.”

Source - David Maister

3. Tips for reputation building

It is impossible for an individual or an organisation to benefit from an accurate and positive reputation without seeking first to build one.

The key steps are to plan a series of proactive communications, involving explaining who you are, what you stand for and why, and then continue to contribute to the public discourse at every opportunity.

Most clients that we work for come to us saying that their competitors are higher profile or better understood than they are.  The reason – almost always – is that they are seeking a profile and the people talking to us, up until that point, had not been.

It is one thing to do good things but quite another to tell people about them.

4. This month’s book review

1001 books you must read before you die, edited by Peter Boxall, ABC Books, 2006

Picking this book up from my shelf to write this was risky.  Ididn’t really have the time to get lost in its 960 pages, as I always do. But I did and it was the usual pleasure. My book neurosis stretches to concerning myself with how I will in fact read everything I want to and should before I die, when of course I have no idea when that willbe.  This book helps at least to identify the must-reads-before-I-die that saves me the lost time of reading less worthy tomes.  It is well categorised, making it easy to exclude least favourite sections, in my case ‘pre-1700’.  I would need to live forever if I am going to read those too.

This book would make a great reference for planning a 2007 reading list.
