Karen Morath, managing director, M Power

Everyone at M Power wishes you a happy and safe festive season and every best wish for 2005.

We did the maths on our usual mass sending of Christmas cards and decided – with apologies to Australia Post and our usual charity card seller – that there is a better way to spend money.

So instead we have donated the same amount of money to the Ronald McDonald Houses adjacent to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.

They make an incredible contribution to families with a sick child and as such, like most, are a very worthy charity.

They also serve as a reminder that while we spend Christmas shopping and making plans for the new year, to acknowledge our extraordinary good fortune and appreciate it for the privilege it is.

No tips or quotes and certainly no gratuitous plugs in this issue of m-news, but we have included a non-business book recommendation that is a good read at this reflective time of year.

The media is in the non-ratings ‘silly season’ period, so like other respected publications(!) m-news is going to follow suit.

In January and February, we are publishing selected highlights of our more than two and a half years of writing m-news.  We hope you find something you value.

Book recommendation

What Matters, success and work-life balance by Daniel Petre, Jane Curry Publishing Pty Ltd, 2004 $29.95.

The author is the ex-head of Microsoft in Australia and wealthy enough for the rest of us to say ‘it’s OK for you’, but nonetheless Daniel Petre’s views on what matters are more insightful and valuable than the usual claptrap about work/life balance.

Definitely food for thought.
