6. This month's book review

1. Brand value

Profitable is a corporate value not a brand value, according to brand guru and author Scott Bedbury.  He says brand values are moral codes.  They are the powerful and positive things that you want your customers and employees to feel when they think about your brand.  He believes most brands have over-promised and under-delivered in the last 20-30 years.

2. Facilitating outside the square

Management off-sites are the thinking outside the square of organisational improvement.  The impact of a new and different environment on the way a group of people thinks and interacts is remarkable.  Even for just half a day.  By employing a trained facilitator who can keep your group’s discussion on target and ensure you get the outcomes you need, excellent results can be achieved.

M Power can provide a facilitator for your next planning session, organise the whole event at a conference centre or cater at our own informal meeting room.

3. Tips on presenting

Whether you are a professional presenter delivering a key note address or you are an occasional speech maker at work, the keys to effective presenting are the same.  M Power has compiled the following three must-do pointers.

    1. Prepare.  Don’t write a single note before you really understand who you will be addressing, why they will be there, who else will be there and what they will be saying, why you will be there and what should happen as a result of your presentation.  Ask as many questions of as many people as you need to ensure you have all of this information.
    2. Prepare.  Think about what value any props you are considering using will add.  An impassioned speech from the heart (and from well written notes!) can have more impact than yet another dazzling display of PowerPoint.  If you need to use stats and charts, then PowerPoint or overheads are great aids, but don’t use them for words.  People are there to listen, not read.
    3. Prepare.  You can’t work a room you’ve never seen.  Make sure you have been in the room you will be presenting in and you know how everything works, however much time it takes.  You will not look and sound authoritative on your subject if you can’t find the light switch.

4. Work we're proud of

M Power was pleased to assist the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind with the communication component of its recent ‘For Sight Week’.

5. M Phatic out soon

A new edition of M Power’s ‘occasional’ newsletter, ‘m phatic’ is about to be distributed.  It features case studies, an article on stakeholder relations as well as news from M Power.  This issue the ‘top seven tips’ are on using email effectively.  If you don’t already receive m phatic, you can subscribe – free – by emailing us or calling with your details.

6. This month's book review

This month’s book review is in fact a website review.  www.fastcompany.com

Fast Company is the most exciting business magazine I’ve ever read.  It’s bold, trend setting and analytical all at the same time.  Great writers, fantastic layout and an underlying energy that is absolutely addictive.

The website is even better, except you can’t read it in bed.  As well as having the current issue of the magazine available to read free on-line, it is the Aladdin’s Cave of business information at the click of a mouse.  Get addicted and Aladdin’s Cave becomes the Bermuda Triangle where you can disappear, easily, for hours.

www.fastcompany.com offers authoritative articles by the best business writers in the world using a keyword search mechanism, has all the past issues archived and offers free e-newsletters, inspirational quotes and more.  It’s invaluable.
