Communication tips
The structure of PowerPoint presentations - low resolution slides that force users to compress information into short bullet lists, presented in a lock-step, linear fashion - promotes (according to Yale professor Emeritus Edward Tufte) "over-generalisations, imprecise statements, slogans, lightweight evidence, abrupt and thinly argued claims."
"Bullet outlines can make us stupid."

A quote we like
“If 50 million people say a foolish thing it is still a foolish thing.”

This month's book review
Standing at the crossroads. Next steps for high-achieving women. Marian N Ruderman and Patricia J Ohlott, Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, 2002
OK don't shoot me, I don't think I've reviewed a women's only book before, although I certainly read a lot of them. This one's from my local library and begs to be recommended - and would be an insightful read for men who manage women, especially women over 40.
The notion of 'agency' - the desire to control one's destiny - is discussed, along with the female desire for connection/s with others, of authenticity and wholeness and self clarity. It looks at the impact, not just of gender and workplace environment, but of age and stage of life.
The idea is that you can apply to your future what you learn about yourself, by reading about others. If that all sounds like mumbo-jumbo, then it's probably not for you, but there is much to recommend here.
Last month M Power -
- spoke about communication
- wrote about communication
- consulted on communication
- trained on communication.
