This is m-news, M Power's monthly e-newsletter. We hope you enjoy reading it. Feel free to forward it to friends or colleagues who may find it useful. M Power is a communication and events company. m-news includes information about related themes - six quick snippets about business, organisational and individual effectiveness, communication and public relations. Communication empowers. Karen Morath, managing director, M Power The ‘quick six’ for February are 1. Winning 1. Winning Former GE chief Jack Welch is writing the supposed definitive tome on business success, rumoured to be called 'Winning'. Based on the premise that while someone is winning, someone else must be losing, it is hard to see how this could be the ticket to success. Let's hope Jack Welch takes a historical view in his book because surely this isn't the recipe for 21st century corporate success. 2. A quote we like "Pack your own parachute." Source: Anonymous 3. Recipe for success Total experience not one-dimensional customer service is one of the three elements of success of the $20 million retail concept store chain, Mecca Cosmetica, according to its owner Jo Horgan. The others are great brands (for sale) and a great retail environment. Source Jo Horgan speaking at the Boss Magazine Leadership Forums, April 19, 2004. 4. Gratuitous plug
We are sharing this month’s gratuitous plug space with a beautiful new product - Baby Pash, luxurious baby-sized pashminas for babies. Baby Pash is the ultimate in softness and warmth, made from a blend of 70 per cent pashmina (the world’s finest cashmere) and 30 per cent silk. Baby Pashes are ideal gifts for newborns or Christenings and are available in beautiful colours from discerning baby stores or online. Please see the website www.babypash.com.au for images and further information. For stockists call (03) 9510 6775.
5. Effective public relations
“Effective public relations is about doing good things and telling people about them.” I don't know where this definition originally came from, but it has driven our consulting ethos for many years. Public relations is very much more than this but, as a starting point for putting a plan together, it gets you thinking in the right direction. If we can assist with your public relations strategy, planning or implementation please contact us.
6. This month's book review
Purple Cow. Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable. Seth Godin, 2003, Portfolio by Penguin USA. All of Seth Godin’s books give me ‘publishing envy’. They are little more than brochures, sell millions and don’t contain much more than an explanation of their respective titles. Indeed, the strap line of this book – transform your business by being remarkable – is the whole idea. Be remarkable. Under no circumstances be very good – that’s boring. The reason his books sell so well is - of course – they’re great. Remarkable in fact. Not a subscriber? Click here to subscribe.
