The ‘quick six’ for October are

1. Organisation insight
2. A quote we like
3. Tips on using meetings wisely
4. Gratuitous plug one
5. Gratuitous plug two
6. This month's book review

1. Organisation insight

According to business writer and speaker Robert Gerrish, too often in business we fail to speak the truth.  He says we say what people want to hear or we act as we’re told to act.

For example, we have been raised to believe it is the right thing to say things like ‘the customer is always right’ or to believe it is right to never say no to new business.  He thinks it is better, because it’s true, to say and believe that clients aren’t always right –and neither are we as service providers – and that until both parties fully understand each other, it is reasonable to expect differences to exist.  It’s part of the process of growing a meaningful, lasting relationship.

2. A quote we like

“Experience is one thing you can’t get for nothing.”

3. Tips on using meetings wisely

  1. Deal with operations separately from strategy
  2. Focus on decisions, not on discussions
  3. Measure the real value of every item on the agenda
  4. Get issues off the agenda as quickly as possible
  5. Put real choices on the table
  6. Adopt common decision making processes and standards
  7. Make decisions stick.

4. Gratuitous plug one

M Power Managing Director Karen Morath has started work writing a book - her first - about public relations.   The title is a closely guarded secret (still thinking!) but it is scheduled to be published by Pennon Publishing, mid 2005.

It will feature conversations with PR gurus and explore the questions that keep so many people awake at night - what is public relations anyway and how can organisations benefit from it?

5. Gratuitous plug two

The next M Power What Women Want Forum will be held on Wednesday November 17 at 7 for 7.30 at Edenhope, 80 Maribyrnong Road, Moonee Ponds.

The theme for this forum is 'look great, feel great, be great' and features three wonderful speakers.

6. This month's book review

100 great businesses and the minds behind them, Emily Ross and Angus Holland, Random House Australia, NSW, 2004

This book is the Readers Digest of business profiles.  It would be unfair to call it superficial, but with 100 descriptions of business minds in 258 pages, they are fleeting meetings rather than in depth insights.  But it is a quick and easy read that makes you think that if they can do it so can you, so a bargain at $32.95.  The short chapters make it ideal for keeping in the car and reading at the lights.
