Branding insights

Branding expert Laura Ries doesn’t think consumers care about brands. Who would ever have thought? She believes consumers only love the ideas, concepts and categories that brands represent in our minds.

She says we love upmarket vodka as a category not the brand Grey Goose. We loved 'desktop computers sold direct' so Dell soared. Now we don't and it doesn't. We do still want 'cheap chic' so Target is relevant and we don't care if our beverage is branded 'Red Bull' when what we want is an energy drink.

If she's right, this must change the way we market and communicate.

A quote we like

“Adopt as your fundamental creed that you will equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community.”

This month's book review

Good to Great by Jim Collins Random House 2001

This book has been around for a few years and me only reading it now reminds me of the struggle I feel to read everything I want to. There are so many new books published every month, each an obstacle to reading decades of classics. Tragically enough, I actually stress about this.

So, here's a tip. This one is a must read. You could read dozens of ordinaries to uncover a book this good. It focuses on what defines greatness in terms of public companies, but there is no doubt that the insights are applicable to not just all organisations but also there is much to learn for individuals as well. What makes a great leader? This book reveals surprise findings. What makes a great company? Definitive answers are here for the reading.
