1. Effective presentations
Most people prepare for formal presentations but breeze often unknowingly through the perhaps dozens they make every day. We
all make presentations whenever we communicate to another person with
an objective in mind and every time we seek to persuade a colleague,
boss or family member about something. We make them on the phone, in person, one-on-one and in groups. How many do you think you make a day?
Imagine how
much more effective you would be if you gave them all the same degree
of preparation as you do for a ‘major’ presentation.
Here are four tips for making the most of all of the presentations you deliver every day.
1. Your audience decides if you were successful or not, so find out about their needs before you start.
2. Strive to convince people about WHY they should make a particular decision not WHAT decision they should make.
3. Make sure
you understand what could influence the environment you will be
communicating in (time, noise, mood, level of formality, rapport,
mutual interest, etc).
4. Be ever ready. Organise
a presentation file of stories, examples, visuals, quotes and jokes
(only if you can make them work) so you’re ready to present whenever
required.

2. A quote we like
“True
leisure is not freedom FROM work but freedom IN work, and, along with
that, the time to converse, to ruminate, to contemplate the meaning of
life."

3. Introducing M Power Speaker Craig Shepherd
The first of a series of profiles introducing speakers represented by M Power speakers.
Craig Shepherd is
not like any other economist. The young, Monaro driving, blonde-tipped
Aussie bloke likes to confront and challenge his audiences by taking
the extreme position on a number of economic issues.
Craig
is the Principal Economist of the National Institute of Economic and
Industry Research (NIEIR), a leading economic research and forecasting
consultancy which is regularly engaged by government and the private
sector.
NIEIR was formed in 1984 and has developed a suite of
econometric models which give it a leading edge capability in national,
state, regional and local area economic analysis.
The
institute’s work has been pivotal in much of the restructuring of the
Australian economy and its Director, Dr Peter Brain, is reputed as one
of Australia’s most renowned economists.
Craig earned his PhD in Economics at Monash University before joining NIEIR in 1999.
The
strength of his economic skills led him to assume responsibility for
the institute’s microsimulation models of household spending as well as
considerable involvement in local area economic activity modelling.
He
heads NIEIR’s team of six researchers and manages some of its larger
clients. He is also called upon regularly for comment on radio and in
newspaper interviews and writes regular articles in industry
magazines.
Craig’s strong analytical skills blend well with his warm personality to deliver an engaging and informative presentation.

5. Written communication workshops
Know the difference between principle and principal? Compliment and complement? Continual and continuous? Its
and it’s? Do your staff? When was the last time you thought seriously
about nouns and verbs, the rules of bullet points and when, if ever, to
use semi-colons? Being able to use written words confidently can make you more effective and more efficient. M Power can help. Our three hour refresher course in mastering written communication improves your writing immediately. Call us on 9510 2592 for info.
6. This month's book review
This month's book review is The empty raincoat - making sense of the future, Charles Handy, Random House 1994.
Interestingly,
the fact that this book was written about the future and is now 10
years old adds to the value of reading it now. In some cases it
is possible to marvel at how accurate his musings were and others
frustrating that there is still so much that we could change if we
really wanted to. This is a book essentially about work and
its role in people's lives, but also about the role of people's lives
in life. It explores community, family, organisations and
belonging and uses a series of paradoxes to highlight how little we can
be sure of. There is a lot that Charles Handy can teach us.
I loved this book. To buy the Empty Raincoat from Amazon click here.
