The fast four for August are

Tips for personal effectiveness

One of the most profound ways to improve personal effectiveness is with knowledge in a broad range of areas.

And that can be achieved so simply. Read.

Make a plan to increase the amount of new information you are exposed to in a month. Choose from the following menu of sources and aim to read a certain number of each every week/month/quarter.

  • blogs (subscribe to some feeds to make it simple)

  • magazines - seek out some you don't routinely see

  • newspapers - not just your 'usual'. Pick up another one and don't ignore your local newspaper

  • books - fiction and non. Put together a list of those you have meant to read and put a timeframe around them. Choose business books, some classic, some new, some philosophy, some politics and economics, personal interests (history of photography, Hollywood biographies,...) and some fiction.

Constantly aim to increase the amount of new information you are exposed to. You will feel a great sense of achievement, genuinely more engaged with the world and you'll wonder what you had been doing with your time.

“Nothing is more dangerous than an idea when it's the only one you have.”

This month's book review

Apprentice to Business Ace - Your Inside-Out Guide to Professional Branding, by Parnos, Robinett and Currie, 2007, $34.95

My mate Helen Robinett, an image adviser who runs Image Quest, is a co-author of this new book that reveals "the immense power of communication, attitude, image, self-branding and personal marketing". It is divided into three sections, with each author owning their slice. They are 'Creating Dynamic Change - Your Secrets to Success', 'Communicating Your Visual Presence' and 'The Power of Personal Public Relations'.

There is something here for men and women but my thought is it would be great for young women especially. It's in book stores or you can order online at Helen's site www.imagequest.com.au
