1. The role of communication in business
After decades of summer trading the Anglesea cinema has closed. It had been part of my family life for 15 years. I assume it finally lost what was an unwinnable battle against DVDs in homes and cars and You Tube et al.
But the logic of that didn't stop me feeling deflated when I learned fold-up chair and BYO cushion cinema would probably never again be part of my life.
It really hurt that there was not even any communication about it closing. Not a sign up, not a "Dear loyal customers" letter pinned to the locked front door and worse, just the program for the Lorne Cinema, 30 minutes drive away, to suggest to us that an era had come to a close.
Communication has a role in the life of a business, right to the very end. The people who had allowed the business to exist - the customers - deserved at least an explanation.
It is easy to see why the proprietors of the Anglesea Cinema would not consider it a priority, but the owners of the Lorne Cinema lost an opportunity to win some friends by commiserating about the local loss and reminding would-be cinema patrons of Lorne's proximity and other attractions and maybe even offering an 'Anglesea' discount as an incentive.
 2. A quote we like “Adopt as your fundamental creed that you will equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community.” Source - Sir John Monash

3. Effective and efficient decision making
This three phase approach to decision making blends Just in Time thinking with time management skills.
Do not attempt to make a decision about anything, ever, without first having the information needed to enable a good decision to be made. Don't mull it over, get stressed about what you will do – do nothing.
1. Find out when the decision needs to be made. 2. By that date, gather all the information that you will need to make the decision. Accept on the last day that what you have will need to be enough - do not postpone the decision if your information is lacking. It will be enough.
3. Decide. Act. Move on.
4. This month's book review
Small is the new big and 183 other riffs, rants, and remarkable business ideas by Seth Godin, Portfolio, USA, 2006 Hard cover $35
I loved this book. It is the best of eight years of Seth Godin's blog posts and as such is snippets of his views on an assortment of business issues - marketing, customer service, communication. His views are original and at times perplexing but he's without doubt one of my pin ups and this is his best yet. To buy Small is the new big click here.
